WHAT ARE WIGS? WHAT DOES A WORD “WIG” MEAN?

A wig (in French „perruque“) – artificial or natural hair that is attached to a base, that is put on a head as a cap, in order to imitate hairstyle. A wig covers all haired part of a head.

WHY WEAR A WIG?

First of all, they are back in fashion. Secondly, they are comfortable. They are an ideal way to quickly bring your head into perfect order. Thirdly, they allow you to radically change yourself as often as you wish. Nothing changes your appearance as much as a new haircut. Also, they say that during the winter a wig can replace the need for a hat.

In general, according to medical sources, the amount of people wearing artificial hair has dropped from 40% to 20%H;. However, the amount of people in need of hair replacement has not decreased. The majority of wig wearers are wealthy middle and upper class women as well as younger women. They make up 80% of all wig wearers.  

Looking good is the main driving force of wig sales secondary to a time-saving aspect; however, this is all about the ladies. Gentlemen don’t tend to share the same enthusiasm about wigs. As a result, the amount of men wearing wigs is not great at all. Most of the men who wear wigs today do so as a part of their profession whether it is in the theater or cinema. It’s a part of work rather than image.

HOW ARE WIGS MADE? WHAT ARE WIGS MADE OUT OF? HOW ARE WIGS MADE FROM HUMAN HAIR?

The shape of wigs is tailored to the shape of the human head and resembles a hat that has hair grown over it.  This kind of a structure sits very well on the human head. A wig that is whole and stitched together from separate ribbons forms the best foundation. This allows the head to breathe. As a result, the hair begins to layer itself naturally and in such a way that the base of the wig is never seen. If the hair is parted in a way that reveals the base of the wig, then it is replaced with another layer of a wig that resembles the skin. The only place where it has been impossible so far to create a natural look is the line where hair begins to grow. That is why most wigs so far cover that line with a fringe of hair.

If such a style does not look good, then you can always use a half wig. When you put it on, your own hair is moved to the front where it can cover the wig.  There is no chance of your hair being recognized as fake when you wear a well-chosen wig.  Hair extensions and other hair accessories also work according to the same principle. Hair extensions, in particular, are in fashion today.

There is demand for more lightweight wigs that do not encompass the entire head and avoid particular parts. These parts include nape, forehead, and temple. They resemble a sort of net through which you push your own hair through. Such extensions can be added to make your hair look fuller, and in the case that you want to change the color of the wig if it doesn’t match your own. Provided that your hair extensions suit your hair both in color and shape, you can achieve a very natural look. The only problem is that the process of adding hair extensions will take a very long time considering you will have to comb through the entirety of your hair.

The so-called “show wigs” that are worn at festivals, concerts and masquerades, do not require the same amount of work to be put into them since they do not require such precise imitation. This allows for the price and quality of these wigs to be reduced as well as their quality as it is rare that someone would wear such a wig every day.
